THE All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has accused a former
governor of the state and governorship candidate of the Labour Party
(LP) in the coming election, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, of lying about
Wednesday’s violence in Ogbomoso.
The violence reportedly involved an APC candidate and members of his
campaign team and some people alleged to be thugs loyal to the LP.
A statement by the party’s Director of Publicity and Strategy,
Olawale Sadare, decried what it called a situation whereby culprits
would rush to the press with “false” information in order to escape
justice after a wrongdoing.
“Dozens of political thugs armed with weapons had waylaid the
campaign train of our candidate for the Ogbomoso North/Ogbomoso
South/Orire Federal Constituency, Mr Oyewole Oyewumi and attacked the
members without provocation around General Hospital Area of Ogbomoso in
broad daylight as they were coming from the venue of a meeting.
“It was an apparent case of an attempt on the life of Oyewumi, who is
a son of the Soun of Ogbomosoland. The prince, accompanied by his
supporters, was about entering his residence when thugs emerged from
nowhere and started destroying vehicles belonging to the APC.
“One of the thugs went for Prince Oyewumi, but he was lucky to have
escaped but not without suffering machete cuts. Eight other members of
the APC who were on his campaign train also sustained varying degrees of
injuries which landed them in the General Hospital, Ogbomoso and
another private hospital where some of them are still receiving
treatment.
“As if these were not enough, Alao-Akala went to the press to sponsor
a report that his party members were attacked by the APC team even when
preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the LP media
agents were being economical with the truth.
“Some residents were able to identify 10 of the attackers and we are
aware that only two of them have been arrested by the police so far, ”
the APC said.

[Video] Obama tells Jonathan, Buhari’s supporters to shun violence
President
of the United States, Barack Obama, has called on the Nigerian President
Goodluck Jonathan and the All Progressives Congress Presidential
candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, to warn their supporters against
committing any violent act in the coming polls.
Obama also did not fail to call for the safe rescue of the more than 200 kidnapped Chibok girls by Boko Haram.
In a video
posted on Monday on the White House official website, President Obama
conveyed the message to the Nigerian people to highlight the opportunity
that the upcoming elections presents for them to stand together in
rejecting violence and extremism and instead show their support for a
more peaceful, secure, and prosperous future.
“So I call
on all leaders and candidates to make it clear to their supporters that
violence has no place in democratic elections—and that they will not
incite, support or engage in any kind of violence—before, during, or
after the votes are counted. I call on all Nigerians to peacefully
express your views and to reject the voices of those who call for
violence. And when elections are free and fair, it is the
responsibility of all citizens to help keep the peace, no matter who
wins,” Obama said.
In his
message, the US President made it clear that his message was for
Nigerians who will be voting in the March 28 and April 11 elections,
urging them to safeguard the democratic process by performing their
civic responsibility peacefully.
Obama
said, “Today, I want to speak directly to you—the people of Nigeria.
Successful elections and democratic progress will help Nigeria meet the
urgent challenges you face today.
“Boko
Haram—a brutal terrorist group that kills innocent men, women and
children—must be stopped. Hundreds of kidnapped children deserve to be
returned to their families. Nigerians who have been forced to flee
deserve to return to their homes. Boko Haram wants to destroy Nigeria
and all that you have worked to build. By casting your ballot, you can
help secure your nation’s progress.”
Obama also
urged all Nigerians to put their ethnic and religious backgrounds
behind them ahead of the polls, saying that the task ahead of the
country requires the people to be united.
“I’m told
that there is a saying in your country: ‘to keep Nigeria one is a task
that must be done.’ Today, I urge all Nigerians—from all religions, all
ethnic groups, and all regions—to come together and keep Nigeria one.
And in this task of advancing the security, prosperity, and human rights
of all Nigerians, you will continue to have a friend and partner in the
United States of America,” he added.Sunday, March 22, 2015
I charge N2m to write songs —Harrysong
Harrison Okiri popularly called
Harrysong is a singer and songwriter. The one-time fisherman and
Political Science graduate of the University of Port Harcourt talks
about the milestones in his career
What are your current projects?
I plan to release an album this year. I just released my single, Ofe Oshe,
and the feedback has been amazing. Releasing singles concurrently is
challenging because singles don’t sell the album; they only attract
people to the album. When people buy the album, they get used to it,
hence the need for fresh songs.
Which artistes do you want to work with?
I want to work with artistes like Flavour, Tuface, Timaya, Duncan Mighty and MI.
Do you feel writers have begun getting the necessary attention in Nigeria?
Yes, they are. I feel privileged to be a
song writer at this time in Nigeria’s history. I remember I used to
write songs for N10, 000 while at Ojez because we wanted to be heard.
Now, I get between N1m and N2m to write songs.
Do you really charge as high as that to write songs for artistes?
Yes, I do. People pay for my services as a song writer because they know how much they will make when the song becomes a hit.
But songwriters do not get the credit for their songs
We are working on that and would get
there before the end of the year. We intend to get a body of registered
songwriters. We have had series of meetings. There are few recognised
writers in the country but the talented ones are unknown. That is why we
need a platform to propel them to success.
Which song gave you the breakthrough?
My songs ‘Better Pikin’, ‘Mandela’, ‘Ofe
Oshe’ were instant hits when released, compared to the rest which took
months to catch up. Mandela was an instant hit; I used to travel to
South Africa almost every month because of it. It is the biggest Mandela
song of our time and the fastest most-downloaded song in the continent.
Talk about your parents
My dad is a professional diver, while my
mum died when I was 14. I studied political science at the University
of Port Harcourt. I wish my mum was alive to see how successful I have
become. I would have loved to take her shopping.
How do you like to dress?
I love to dress cool and comfortable. My
favourite colour is black but I am crazy about property. I like
investing in real estate. Because of my background, I am inspired by
success. I am scared of failure; I always want to achieve something I
can fall back on in future.
SHOCKER: Amaechi’s Deputy Dumps APC For PDP
The Deputy Governor of Rivers
State, Tele Ikuru, has dumped the state’s ruling All Progressives
Congress, APC, to join the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, reliable
sources have told PREMIUM TIMES.
Mr. Ikuru, who was one of Governor
Rotimi Amaechi’s major ally, is said to have announced his defection in
Port Harcourt, the state capital at about 4 p.m.
The decampee was first elected deputy
governor to Celestine Omehia in 2007, before the duo was removed by the
Supreme Court less than six months in office. When Mr. Amaechi was sworn
in as governor, he retained Mr. Ikuru as his deputy and the duo fought
against the interests and allies of the former governor of the state,
Peter Odili.
At the time Mr. Amaechi fell out with
the leadership of the PDP and defected to the APC with majority of his
aides, Mr. Ikuru remained loyal to the governor and fought on the same
side.
A source from the Brick House, Port
Harcourt, who pleaded not to be named because he is not authorised to
speak on the matter, told PREMIUM TIMES, that Mr. Ikuru has left the
APC.
“I can tell you that the deputy governor has defected to the PDP. He has already informed the governor about it and may soon address a press conference,” the source said.
“I can tell you that the deputy governor has defected to the PDP. He has already informed the governor about it and may soon address a press conference,” the source said.
Attempts to reach the media aides to the
deputy governor failed as they would not pick calls or respond to text
messages to their telephones.
Mr. Ikuru’s defection could further
polarise the already volatile political situation in Rivers that has
pitted loyalists of Mr. Amaechi against those of the PDP governorship
candidate, Nyesom Wike, who himself is a former ally to the outgoing
governor.
