Court orders DStv to suspend increase in subscription fees

In March, MultiChoice Nigeria Limited, owners of DStv announced a 20% price increase for all its satellite pay TV bouquets in Nigeria. Multichoice said the increase, which was supposed to take effect from April 1st, was necessary for them to continue offering good quality programming to its subscribers. But the increase is not going to happen for now after a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos restrained the company from increasing the tariffs.

The restraining order was given at the court following a class action suit filed by two Lagos-based lawyers, Osasuyi Adebayo and Oluyinka Oyeniji, challenging the increase. The judge said there should be no increase until the court meets on April 16th to hear the case.

Drama on actress Halima Abubakar's instagram page

There was mild drama on actress Halima Abubakar's instagram page after she posted a message telling her followers to stop advertising on her page or she would delete such comments. Some of her followers had something to say about it.

Facebook drama between a woman, her boyfriend and her friend

Lol. This is just a random Facebook drama that happened today that I stumbled upon and found interesting. So a lady named Ovedje Blessing posted a photo of herself and her longtime boyfriend named Henry Emeka on her Facebook page. Her friend named Grace Adaobi Oraneli saw the pic and had something to say about it. She apparently thinks her friend Ovedje is wasting her time with the Emeka dude who has refused to put a ring on it. Ovedje and Henry respond to Grace. Grace attacks Henry..lol. See the rest

Buzz… social media diary

Amaechi, APC were wrong on result sheets – INEC
THE Independent National Electoral Commission has reacted to the Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi’s protest on the non availability of result sheets at his polling units on Saturday.
Amaechi had refused to be accredited in his polling unit during the presidential and National Assembly elections because he could not confirm the availability of the result sheet.
But INEC’s statement issued in Port Harcourt on Sunday by the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs. Gesila Khan, insisted that the commission was not under any obligation to show everybody election result sheets.
Comments
Conscience: There is nothing untoward in what the governor did. He asked a question but no answer was given. If what the REC said in a statement was communicated to Amaechi at the polling unit, he would not have pushed the issue further. Once bitten, twice shy! Amaechi has travelled this road before and he knows the character of the people he is dealing with. Eternal vigilance, they say, is the price of liberty.
Anion: Did Amaechi’s question get to the REC? No. He rather chose to intimidate the corps member at his unit. Result sheet is shown before voting, not before accreditation.
Victor Olowogorioye: What should be noted is the fact that Amaechi was an ‘insider.’ Having worked with members of the Peoples Democratic Party in the past, he knows the party’s rigging strategies and this may have informed his request for the result sheet. Though the request might have made him sound uninformed about the voting process and his limitations, with the INEC’s clarification, he would have realised that the commission was not under any obligation to show the result sheets to voters. Amaechi would have done better by briefing the APC’s agents on measures they would employ to checkmate possible manipulation of results.
Sam: I do not believe Amaechi is an insider. He is the master planner who has surrounded himself with bad boys since his days as a speaker. But there is an individual who knows his strategies and how to handle them. Nyesom Wike knows him and what is required to thwart his strategies. This is the reason Amaechi is crying for sympathy.
Mickykarim: Amaechi is an interested party in an election under his jurisdiction. He is also a top member of his party at both state and national levels. Therefore, he could not have been considered as “everybody.”
The fact that the APC agent sighted and signed the documents at INEC office did not translate into availability of said materials at the polling centre. If INEC officials had provided the result sheet on Amaechi’s demand as evidence of a transparent process, the entire imbroglio would have been averted.
Besides, INEC would have demonstrated good faith in exercising its duty. To refer to and designate Amaechi as “everybody” was a blunder on the part of INEC. What stopped the election officials from showing the result sheet to the governor, considering his position as the chief security officer of the state on a mission to ensure all went well with the election in his domain?
Jimmy: Amaechi needed a little more patience. He went to the polling centre with a wrong mindset. He should have waited till after voting and counting of ballots. Then, he would see where they would record the results.
Apparently, the sheet was with the INEC officials but they chose not to show it to the governor. Amaechi ended up wasting his vote because he was not patient enough.
Gaskiyatruth: The INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, promised that investigation would be done to find out what exactly happened in Rivers. It is the outcome of the investigation and Jega’s final statement that one should await, and not what the commissioner has said.
Best Iyke Omorede: Result sheets are sensitive materials used after elections, not before accreditation. You do not even need them during voting. The party agents are present during the counting and counting. So, they are expected to know the results and protest irregularities. What Amaechi did was unbecoming of his status as a party chieftain and governor. He has actually heightened the tension in the state.
As a responsible citizen, he should have allowed himself to be accredited and then proceed to vote peacefully while waiting for how they would record the results. The alarm should have been better raised by the party agent after counting.

72% telecom subscribers rate services poor – Survey

Despite surpassing the tele-density target, investigations indicate that telecommunication operators in the country have failed in the key area of quality service delivery on an industry-wide scale.
An industry survey conducted by the Consumers Affairs Bureau of the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, revealed that 101,122,000 subscribers, representing 72.23 per cent of the total 140,822,483, were not satisfied with the operator’s services.
Only 21.05 per cent believed the services were satisfactory, while 6.72 per cent simply could not rate the performance of the operators
The results of the survey appeared to have confirmed a latest report on the Key Performance Indicators, KPI, for the service providers, which scored the operators low in terms of the quality of services they rendered to the consumers.
The KPI for the telecoms industry in Nigeria, which was jointly agreed by the NCC and the service providers is a business metric used to evaluate factors that are crucial to the quality of services from all the service providers.
The survey further revealed that the operators were currently struggling to achieve the metrics, which are indicated by the Call Set-Up Success Rate, CSSR, Drop Call Rate, DCR, Traffic Channel Congestion, TCH CONG and Stand Alone Dedicated Control Channel Congestion, SDCCH despite increased tele-density as was announced recently by the NCC.
In addition, the survey findings indicated that each of the metrics has a set target for achievement, which all operators must meet to avoid sanctions from the Commission.
For the Call Set-Up Success Rate, Drop Call Rate, Traffic Channel Congestion, and Stand Alone Dedicated Control Channel Congestion operators must hit the target of 98, 1, 0.20 and 2 per cent respectively.
So far, the result of the survey also indicated that only the new entrant into the sector, Emerging Markets Telecommunication Services, EMTS, going with the brand name, Etisalat surpassed the target mark while others could not meet it.
For instance, Etisalat surpassed the 98 per cent mark for Call Set-Up Success Rate hitting over 99 per cent while Airtel, Glo and MTN trailed behind scoring 97, 96.70 and 96.80 per cent.
By the record, it means that Etisalat subscribers find it easy calling from their network.
On the Drop Call Rate, a metric which has often topped the complaint list of subscribers at the quarterly Consumer Parliament organised by the Consumer Affairs Bureau, Etisalat also recorded the lowest score with a 0.40 per cent, while MTN and Glo over-run the set target of 1per cent, hitting 1.20 while Airtel scored 0.82 per cent.
One major reason while subscribers rated the operators so poorly in quality services poll was the high level of congestions on the networks, despite huge claim of investment on expansion.
Traffic Channel Congestion report indicated that Etisalat also recorded the least congestion rate falling far below the target of 2 per cent, with a metric score of 0 per cent, meaning that subscribers on the Etisalat did not experience congestion.
Unfortunately, for the same metric, Airtel and Glo recorded over 0.50 per cent, while MTN recorded below 0.50 per cent of the Traffic Channel Congestion rating. Similarly, on the Stand Alone Dedicated Control Channel Congestion with a metric of 0.20, while Glo and Airtel recorded 0.60 and 0.40 per cent respectively, Etisalat and MTN were on 0.10 and 0.80.
It would be recalled that the Commission had endured a period of 18 months during which it reduced the KPIs for the operators.
It however regretted that there has been no significant improvement from the three operators; MTN, Glo and Airtel as they promised.
Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Dr. Eugene Juwah on the sidelines of the just concluded Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, said the Commission had to take a more drastic action to improve user experience in respect of issues with capacity of the networks and that it would appear that the service providers load up the network as soon as there is some expansion.
He said the Commission reached understanding with all the service providers that the KPI’s upon which they were sanctioned in 2012 should be reduced over a period of 18 months during which they were to make significant improvement through provision of more infrastructures and achieve a progressive improvement in quality of service.
However, the latest report may have suggested that the operators have not braced up with the agreement on the KPI.

Fr Mbaka still insisting GEJ is after his life. Releases statement

Controversial Enugu-based Reverend father, Fr Mbaka is still insisting that the president and his wife want him dead. He's now accusing Enugu police of not taking the threat seriously and claiming that some men packed in a Hilux bus came to look for him recently at his Parish but didn't find him. Below is a statement he released via his Media Officer, Ike Maximus Ugwuoke..
"It is with a deep sense of concern that we are constrained to make this statement on the continued threat to the life of Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka over his 2015 New Year message titled “From Good Luck to Bad Luck. The Enugu State Police Command has refuted claims by Fr. Mbaka that his life is in danger. It dismissed Fr. Mbaka’s outcry over threat to his life as baseless.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Ebere Amarizu , DSP, was quoted as saying, “We do not have any report by Fr. Mbaka over threat to his life. We have not received any complaint from him”.
On the backdrop of the above, one begins to wonder whether the alarm raised by Fr. Mbaka on an alleged plot to kill him was a mere rhetoric as the police had made it to appear merely because there has not been an official report to the police over it.
Absence of a formal report on threat to one’s life doesn’t negate the reality of such threat more so when the victim had made a public outcry on this issue.
To argue otherwise is akin to denying the fact of death in the face of a man’s corpse merely because there is no certificate certifying his death…
Yesterday (Wednesday) strange hoodlums in a black Hilux besieged his parish compound but they left disappointed when they could not see him.
"Wherever and whoever this threat is coming from, we state that there are strong and compelling circumstances pointing towards the fact that Fr. Mbaka’s latest attacks were stemming from his said 2015 New Year message, which was not favourable to the President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration.”

FG places security agencies on red alert over fuel scarcity

THE Federal Government, on Thursday, placed all the nation’s security agencies on a red alert over the fresh fuel scarcity being experienced across the state of the federation and Abuja.
This came as a result of fears of possible violence being entertained by tanker drivers ahead the general election.
In a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Thursday night by the Department of State Service (DSS), the service disclosed that it had observed lately the build-up of queues at petrol stations.
The statement, signed by its spokesperson, Marilyn Ogar, stated that investigation had revealed that the trucks that would hitherto have loaded products from the South for distribution in the North were reluctant to do so.
According to her, “this development is premised on fears by National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) of being caught in likely election violence as was witnessed in 2011, which resulted in loss of lives and property.”
The statement disclosed that “the government recognises the fact that NARTO and such other unions provide essential services and, as such, adequate security arrangements have been emplaced to guarantee their safety.”
It stated that consequently, brigade commanders, police commissioners and state directors of the DSS had been directed by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), the IGP and the DGSS respectively to provide adequate security.
Also, the Federal Government has ordered a water-tight security at the Nigerian borders, to prevent infiltration of the country by foreign mercenaries, ahead the general election.
This came just as the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Suleiman Abba, called on security agencies to provide effective synergy towards ensuring free, fair and credible conduct of the polls.
