Human rights lawyer, Mr. Tunji
Braithwaite, says the National Assembly can never approve the
resolutions of the National Conference because most of the resolutions
do not favour corrupt politicians.
Braithwaite said this at the round-table
discussion on the state of Lagos, with the theme “Revamping Lagos”,
organised by a group, Free Lagos, on Wednesday.
The human rights advocate, who commended
President Goodluck Jonathan for convoking the conference, maintained
that Jonathan goofed by not subjecting the resolutions of the conference
to a referendum.
He said, “Jonathan went ahead to convoke
the conference and I was a member. We worked hard. Jonathan said at the
inauguration of the conference he would consider sending the outcome of
that conference to the people of this country by way of referendum and I
told him he should never send the resolution to the National Assembly
because they will never support a product of the conference because the
conference has removed the ground from under their feet.
“That constitution is good for the people
of this country but bad for the erstwhile rulers, the corrupt people
that have riding roughshod on the people of this country so how do you
expect them to support you? Why for God sake did Jonathan neglect to ask
the Nigerian people to look at the new constitution? Was he under a
spell?”
Braithwaite also berated the All Progressives Congress for refusing to participate in the National Conference last year.
